Explain "Hitting me on the D&D level". I have no idea what that actually means. Seriously. Confused.

Gee if the DM had a laptop it would be easier to randomly generate NPCs on the fly. And there's all those neat programs that generate full NPCs that run on XL, and you could get XL on your new laptop, and it'd be wireless so you could run it at your D&D game and be ok.

Yes but it's in the other room, not in the front room where a laptop would be.

Ah the sobering voice of reason. I think everyone could use a gothfox on our shoulder to keep us from making those crazy-ass impulse buys. ;)

It's one of life's little cruelties that Reason can be so unreasonable...

I had to read this a few times, but I still get this:

"OH NO"...and then a picture of the album cover for "Justified"
And then Justin T. on a lap top, RPGing with you...

Yeah, I just wanted to share that...

ACH! Evil. You are pure evil.

Kind of cute, but EVIL nonetheless (and that's just so that I could type my favorite word, nonetheless).

I hate to be Satan about this, but...

I used my laptop for GMing, and it was freakin awesome. I had a gigantic folder filled with ambient sound clips which I'd copy into sub folders for habitats, like cities, forests, caves, etc. Then I'd just run tracks individually or run the whole playset so the players could feel the mood.

I had my whole rules system available, all my npcs, monsters, etc in an excel file on various tabs, so I didnt have to have piles of folders and paper everywhere. It saved a lot of space and added some cool features (mainly the music).

However, you could do all that with a really cheap laptop. The kind that is the 'little brother' of your PC. There's lots of these out there for dirt cheap nowadays, that are able to nicely get on the net, run the usual apps, and store your docs and files. However, most people go for the big league machines that can outdo their PC, and after having done that for a few years now, I can tell you that:
1) it's expensive as bloody god-awful hell. you pay 3x more for your power than you do for a PC
2) you usually can't upgrade anything but your memory
3) if you have a problem the whole machine has to go somewhere for service and you could lose all your shit

Any Pentium 3 laptop can do everything from web design to writing to net surfing and running music. If I was you, and could not resist getting one, I'd get a refurb P2 or P3 laptop for under $500 (I've seen them out there) and have a jolly time with it, but leave the real power stuff on your PC.

I'm building a PC right now from scratch because this laptop is just not doing graphics and game stuff very well anymore, and I can't upgrade. I wish I'd kept my PC and spent less on a laptop. For what you and I would do with one, it's a novelty with a lot of really expensive needs to be met.

Hope this helps

Hmm, actually that did. maybe that's really the way to go. I have a good enough PC for City (and that's all I'm worried about). I don't need a laptop for CoH, as I'd never leave my house or wireless area, but I'd like to get a nice wireless ready laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion! That'll definately save me cash!
